How-to guide

Dreaming

Like sleep sorts the day's memories, each night Manas reflects on your conversations with it. On Monday it suggests what to finish, automate or remember.

What it is

Sleep is when your brain sorts the day: it keeps what matters and lets the rest go. Dreaming does the same for your work with Manas. It is a built-in Manas feature with its own setting: personal, run as you, only in your DM with Manas, never in a channel. It is off until you turn it on and accept what it reads.

  • Each night (from 02:00 IST) Manas reflects on the day you talked with it. Today it reads only your Slack DM with Manas: your messages, Manas's answers and your scheduled-chat results. Never the Morning brief or Dreaming's own posts, never channels. When you turn it on you can tick Include my web chats (ticked by default); Manas keeps that choice, and reading your web chats comes in a later release.
  • It writes one short private note (at most 2,000 characters): your asks, commitments (with due dates if you said them), patterns that repeat and open threads. Days you didn't talk with Manas get no note.
  • Notes are kept 60 days, then deleted. Nobody else sees them: they're not posted anywhere in Slack; Manas stores them for you.
  • Every Monday at 10:30 IST (you can change the day and time) it reads your last 14 days of notes (not your raw chats) and posts suggestions in your DM, each with one button.

It has its own Dreaming section on Manas's Home tab (it isn't one of your Scheduled chats). If the Morning brief is on, a commitment due today or overdue shows there as one line: From Dreaming: …

When to use it

  • You start things with Manas and forget to finish them.
  • You ask Manas for the same thing every week and could make it a scheduled chat or a skill.
  • You promise things in passing and want a nudge when they're due.

How to use it

  1. In Slack, open Manas's Home tab and find Dreaming (or the card Manas can work for you in the background in your DM with @manas, right after you press Connect), or type /manas dreaming on.
  2. Press Turn on Dreaming. Read what it reads, keeps and does, leave Include my web chats ticked or untick it, and press Turn on. (/manas dreaming on shows the same text with Turn on, Turn on without web chats and Cancel.)
  3. Talk with Manas in your DM as usual. Each night it writes a note about that day.
  4. On Monday, pick what helps: Help me finish (Manas helps in the thread), Create scheduled chat (the usual card with Create, Test run and Cancel) or Save as a skill (Manas Builder prepares it in the thread). Not useful means it's never suggested again.
  5. Want another day or time? For example /manas dreaming time every Friday 16:00.

Good to know

  • Suggestions only: nothing happens unless you press a button. A suggestion you ignore comes back at most twice more (three times in all); one you accept isn't repeated. On a Monday with no notes, nothing is posted.
  • /manas dreaming (or /manas dreaming status) tells you whether it's on, what it reads, when suggestions come and how many notes you have. /manas dreaming forget deletes all your notes and suggestions right away; Dreaming stays on unless you turn it off.
  • Turn it off with Turn off in its Home tab section or /manas dreaming off; your notes stay until they expire or you forget them. Show my suggestions now on the Home tab posts suggestions in your DM at once, only for you; it doesn't replace Monday's.
  • If Manas changes what Dreaming reads, the Home tab shows Review what Dreaming reads so you can accept the new text.

If something goes wrong

Nothing came on Monday
There were no notes: Dreaming only writes one on days you talked with Manas in your DM. Check with /manas dreaming.
Show my suggestions now says there are no notes yet
Dreaming hasn't written any yet. Talk with Manas in your DM; the first note comes that night.
I don't see the button
Connect Manas first (the Dreaming section and the card only show once you're connected). /manas dreaming on works too.

Try it in Manas.
